The National Sports Council (NSC), in an effort to bring the Wildey Gymnasium back to prominence and cater to locals and international clients, has given the two VIP suites a needed facelift.

Yesterday’s renaming ceremony at the Wildey, St. Michael complex, was attended by Her Excellency, The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason, President of Barbados; Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Charles Griffith; Minister of Housing Lands and Maintenance, Dwight Sutherland and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Yolande Howard.

The suites – the President’s Suite and the Garfield Sobers Suite – are named after the President of Barbados and National Hero, The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment, Charles Griffith stated that the suites were, “cultural symbols, symbols that are a manifestation of what this government is proposing to do on the landscape of Barbados to showcase excellence.”

The Minister highlighted the work that the NSC was doing to prepare the youth for their respective programmes noting:  “I am fully aware of the social impact of sports and what it can do to youngsters in this country to move them to the next level, and I’m fortunate to be in charge of a ministry that is responsible for bringing about that change through primarily the National Sports Council that is responsible for developing sports in this country.”
