Constituents of St George North will head to the polls on Wednesday, November 11, 2020.

Prime Minister Mia Mottley made this announcement from The Cabinet Room during a media briefing this evening, October 2.

In addition to releasing the date for the by-election, the PM also revealed that Nomination Day for the constituency of St George North to select its next Member of Parliament will be Monday, October 26, 2020.

Gline Clarke, the immediate former Member of Parliament for St George North, announced his resignation two weeks ago. The resignation took effect on September 30 when it was read in the House of Assembly, leaving a vacancy in that constituency.

In her brief address, PM Mottley said that correspondence had been sent to Her Excellency Dame Sandra Mason and pursuant to the Constitution of Barbados and the Representation of the People’s Act, the vacancy had to be filled within 90 days.

Due to the present COVID-19 environment, the PM hinted that there would be far less political rallies but three political debates will be hosted by the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).

In addition, discussions continue with the Chief Electoral Officer to establish protocols for the polling stations, in light of the pandemic.

“They will now, in the midst of preparing their protocols for the conduct of a poll in a pandemic, take into account the desire of all of us for there to be a reduction in the density of persons going into any particular room at once without affecting the capacity of persons to vote,” PM Mottley said of the ongoing process.

Clarke will now take up the role of Barbados’ High Commissioner to Canada.
