Business executive Ryan Walters, a candidate of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) in the 2022 general election, and lawyer and consumer advocate Tricia Watson were officially sworn in as the newest opposition senators on Tuesday. This development followed Ralph Thorne’s appointment as Leader of the Opposition.
In a brief ceremony held at State House, President Dame Sandra Mason administered the oaths to Watson and Walters. She urged them to approach their duties with seriousness and prioritize the nation’s interests.
After the ceremony, RalphThorne, who recently assumed the role of opposition leader, having switched parties last Friday, expressed his confidence in the newly appointed senators, citing their significant contributions to the community and their commendable backgrounds.
He noted the two individuals of remarkable merit, educated in the finest Barbadian tradition. Thorne remarked. that their selection was straightforward, given the urgency of the situation. They embody the quality of leadership he sought to nominate in the Senate.
Walters, a former DLP vice president and spokesperson on business, contested in the St Michael North West constituency in the previous election. He affirmed his allegiance to the DLP and his dedication to enhancing the well-being of residents despite his new roll
He perceives his Senate position as complementary to diverse voices in Barbados. Walters stated that his commitment to the Democratic Labour Party remains unwavering. He has been an active member since 2018, serving in various capacities. He is eager to represent not only the people of St Michael North West but all Barbadians in this new chapter. He said.
Tricia Watson, known for her involvement in consumer advocacy, particularly in the Barbados Light & Power rate hearings, emphasized her ongoing dedication to advocating for the rights and welfare of Barbadians.
