A Justice of the Peace’s role is to provide a national service to fellow Barbadians, and does not carry a fee.

President of Barbados, Her Excellency The Most Honourable, Dame Sandra Mason, emphasised this after just over 30 new Justices of the Peace (JPs) were sworn in at State House on Monday morning.

While thanking them for undertaking the very important role, Dame Sandra lamented that she came across JPs who made the mistake and offered their services for a fee to fellow citizens who were in need of a signature.

But, she cautioned, that a JP must exercise their function for free because that is what they committed to do as all documents needed to be authenticated.

Dame Sandra further congratulated the island’s newest JPs, and commended them for their “good work” on behalf of the country.
