At the request of the government of Barbados and in agreement with the government of the Republic of Cuba, last Friday, January 22, 2021, a group of eleven doctors and four laboratory specialists arrived in Barbados from Havana to complete the contingent of the ¨Henry Reeve¨ Medical Brigade, which has been in that country since April 5, 2020, made up of 98 nurses and a doctor, who are supporting the efforts to confront the pandemic in this sister nation in a small island developing state in the Caribbean . They were received at the airport slab upon arrival by the Ambassador of Barbados to the Caribbean, His Excellency David Comissiong, the Director Ambassador of Latin America and the Caribbean in the Ministry of Foreign Affair and Foreign Trade, Sandra Gittens, the directors of Medicine and Human Resources of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the Chief of the Henry Reeve Brigade in Barbados, Dr. Daymarelis Ortega and the Cuban Ambassador, Sergio Jorge Pastrana.
The Chief Doctor of the Brigade and the 98 nurses who have been working already for nine months in the facilities of the Barbadian national health system are now joined by epidemiologists, respiratory ilness specialists, anesthesiologists, physiotherapists and adult and pediatric intensive care specialists who will work alongside them.
Four laboratory specialists will complement the forces that, at the Best Dos Santos central laboratory in Barbados, perform PCR tests in real time to determine the cases of the pandemic that appear in this country.
The fifteen specialists arrived with negative PCR tests carried out in the 72 hours before boarding for their flight, and are in the hotel facilities currently in the quarantine that is scheduled for all travelers arriving in the country, awaiting the final result of a second PCR-RT test that will be performed before completing the week of quarantine.
Once this procedure has been completed, like the first group that arrived in Barbados in April of last year, they will visit the Monument to the Martyrs of Barbados at Paynes Bay beach, where they will engage the commitment of the mission they will be undertaking, in order to join immediately in the corresponding medical duties they came to perform.
