In keeping with its corporate responsibility mandate of: Energy for Poverty Alleviation, the Barbados National Oil Company Limited (BNOCL) on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology (SJPI) to establish the BNOCL Scholarship Fund.
At the signing ceremony, BNOCL Group Human Resources Manager, Ronnie Gittens, stated: “In recent years the industry has seen an increased demand for qualified persons in the technical skills area. This MOU paves the way for multi-faceted opportunities to develop competencies in the areas of renewable energy, welding, motor vehicle engineering, electronics or related new and emerging studies.”
With these new qualifications in the technical fields, scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to improve not only their lives but the communities around them.
The scholarship fund is to the tune of $11,000 and will fund expenses for 11 students over the next academic year. In addition, two of the recipients with the highest GPA at the end of the period of the scholarship will be awarded an internship with the BNOCL. The principal of the SJPI, Ian Drakes, was deeply appreciative of the initiative and said: “This is truly an exciting time for us. This signing illustrates the deepening of SJPI’s long-standing relationship with the BNOCL and showcases our partnership in a more sustainable way.”
