Barbados And Mexico Seeking To Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Barbados and Mexico are keen on strengthening bilateral relations in the area of foreign trade.

This was a key talking point when Ambassador of Mexico to Barbados, Víctor Hugo Morales Meléndez, paid a recent courtesy call on Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Dr. The Most Honourable Jerome Walcott, at his Ministry, at Culloden Road, St. Michael.

Minister Walcott indicated to Ambassador Meléndez his desire to further promote the collaboration between Barbados and Mexico, in the interest of enhancing what he described as “an already cooperative relationship”.

Senator Walcott also articulated his interest in the work being done by Mexico in the area of sustainable development, with the manufacturing of bricks and the building of houses from Sargassum seaweed. 

Ambassador Meléndez, in expressing his delight at the celebration of the 50^th anniversary of relations between the two countries, told Minister Walcott that he was interested in enlisting Barbados’ cooperation in the Latin American and Caribbean Space Agency, an important initiative of Mexico, which is already engaging the attention of some Caribbean countries.

The Ambassador noted the potential for increased trade and an exchange of visitors between the two countries.

Ambassador Meléndez further stated that he recognised Barbados as a leader in human rights and in the fight against climate change.

In acknowledging the sentiments, Minister Walcott stressed he believed in the potential for enhanced collaboration between Mexico and Barbados, on various issues.

The two officials also discussed opportunities for scholarships for Barbadians to study in Mexico.

Barbados and Mexico established diplomatic ties on September 11, 1972.
