Barbadians are being encouraged to invest in the renewable energy sector.
Chief Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Officer in the Ministry of Energy and Business, William Hinds, urged members of the public to take advantage of the opportunity to install domestic renewable energy systems up to 10 kilowatts (kW), without having to apply for a licence.
Mr. Hinds made the comments today as he addressed a press briefing on the Householders’ Right to Renewable Energy Policy (RTRE) Policy, at the Energy Division, Trinity Business Centre, Country Road, St. Michael.
The Chief Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Officer said: “When you invest in your renewable energy, you move from your income bracket to a higher income bracket because you have done that investment.
“There are many investments where there’s no certainty, there are many investments where there is depreciation…. But…when you invest in renewable energy, you get guaranteed returns on your investment, you get guaranteed profits and your income increases.”
He stated that in 2020, 114,000 householders used 361 million kWh of electricity. He pointed out that the average household in Barbados used 263 kilowatt hours of electricity per month, which was typically a two-kilowatt system.
Mr. Hinds noted that many Barbadians had expressed an interest in installing renewable energy systems. “From the time the Prime Minister made that announcement [in the Budget earlier this year], we have been receiving calls asking when can we start? So the interest has been great,” he disclosed.
Senior Technical Officer in the Project Monitoring and Coordination Team, Destine Gay, said various things had been put in place to support the rollout of the Householders’ Right to Renewable Energy Policy.
