Programme Manager for Human Resource Development at the Caricom Secretariat, Dr Laurette Bristol has congratulated Guyana’s Education Ministry on completing the series that has been designed by Guyanese for Guyanese teachers and students.
Dr. Bristol who joined the launch via Zoom said that the intentions and aspirations for the Atlantic Reader series meet the needs of literacy at the local level and extends the integration agenda of the Caribbean which is to foster the ideal Caribbean person through education.
“So Honourable Minister, to you and your team, congratulations and I want to encourage you and your team and the officials and the teachers to continue to share this best practice and the products which have emerged with the rest of the Caribbean,” she remarked.
Dr. Bristol said that the CARICOM Secretariat as a regional partner is excited to continue to be part of this journey with the Ministry to realize the aims and goals of the Human Resource Development Strategy 2030. It’s an exciting moment not just for Guyana but for the entire Caribbean,” Dr Bristol noted.
The Atlantic Reader Series Books one to six is a series of locally produced textbooks designed to accelerate learners’ literacy acquisition at the Primary level. Soon, all Primary School pupils will receive their copy of the reader.
The Education Ministry said that it sees the series as a critical part of our arsenal to combat challenges that have historically affected our children’s ability to excel in literacy. The Atlantic Reader series is a reader/workbook combination intended to contribute to the overarching goal of producing literate children by Grade four. In addition to the printed copies, the books are available on the Ministry of Education’s website at www.education.gov.gy.
