Barbados, April 3 rd , 2017 – A week of enthralling action is in store for tennis fans as the C.O.Williams Barbados International Junior Tennis Tournament serves off on April 8 th , 2017, pitting Barbados’ best against a bevy of top junior players from across the world.

Noting that C.O. Williams was truly excited about the future of tennis in Barbados, Director, Neil Weekes said the inaugural sponsorship was indeed timely, given the significant pool of talented juniors presently playing the game and the Island’s potential for creating champions.

Weekes stated: “Sponsorship of this International Tennis Federation (ITF) sanctioned international tournament continues C.O. Williams’ longstanding support of junior tennis in Barbados. Like many Barbadian tennis fans, we are excited about what the future holds for tennis. We are seeing a resurgence of the game’s popularity, and we have been thrilled and encouraged by the international performances of our best senior players. This starts at the junior level, and this tournament, the C.O. Williams Barbados International Junior Tennis Tournament, is a small but vital step on the path to success. Many may not recall that Darian King, our most successful player yet, was crowned champion of the under-18 segment of this very tournament back in 2009.”

The C.O. Williams Director said Barbadians could look forward to a keenly contested tournament in both the under-14 division which is sanctioned by the ITF as a class 1 event, and the under-18s which is Class 4.

We are anticipating a thrilling tournament as our local players take on the best competition from across the region and internationally including players from Latin America, North America, and as far afield as Japan and Israel. This in our view is what tennis development is all about.”

Also hailing the C.O. Williams’ sponsorship as vital for the sport, Sandra Osborne, Vice President of the Barbados Tennis Association said she hoped the gesture would be the first stroke in a meaningful collaboration between the Association and the C. O. Williams Group of Companies.

“I would like to thank the C. O. Williams Group of Companies for coming on board to sponsor this Tournament and for making a commitment to support Junior Tennis. You have our assurance that we are committed to doing as much as we can to promote and develop Tennis in Barbados and the involvement of sponsors such as yourselves is critical to our success,” Osborne said.

A total of 164 players from 27 countries are entered in the Tournament, with an additional 40 eyeing a chance to play in the Under-18 Qualifying event. Under-18 qualifying matches will be held on Saturday April 8 th and Sunday April 9 th at the Barbados Yacht Club and the Under-14s also start with a round robin at the same location with knockout matches throughout the week. The main draw will commence at the National Tennis Centre on Monday April 10.
